THE METAL WORLD NEVER KNEW WHAT TO MAKE OF FRANCE’S CHAOS ECHŒS.
BUT TO BE FAIR, THE GROUP NEVER MADE IT EASY ON ANY LISTENER.

Text by Phil Freeman, 2019

The first wave of releases seemed almost deliberately alienating. A debut EP, Tone of Things to Come, that combined elements of death and doom metal with eerie electronics to create something inward-looking and coiled. A collection of mostly ambient pieces, performed by but two group members. Raw rehearsal tapes. An instrumental live recording. Taken together, they painted a portrait of a group that was part ALUK TODOLO, part BLUT AUS NORD, and part FUSHITSUSHA; that had little if any interest in traditional heavy metal catharsis, or indeed being “heavy” in any conventional sense of that term; and that had even less interest in explanations.

“We are in the exploration, we go in search of feelings, emotions with music as vector.
It is therefore natural not to expect anything conventional, calibrated”.
— Stefan Thanneur, Interview by Cathal Rodgers,
Existentiell - Boundaries and Paradigms, 2019.

Debut album Transient changed everything. Beginning with gently struck bells and slowly ringing guitars, it was like stumbling into a ritual chamber and hearing the door lock behind you. Nodding to black metal, to space rock, to PINK FLOYD and to free jazz, it sounded like it was recorded inside a haunted space station, cold winds blowing through the steel corridors as the vocals bounced from one side of the stereo field to the other like a phantom in your head. Even when the drums were pounding at their hardest, the feeling of floating weightless, going nowhere, remained.

This was new territory even for the members themselves. Gathered in a poorly soundproofed basement night after night, they experimented with ideas drawn from minimalism and modern composition, seeming to come up with mere chaos until, the next morning, the results revealed themselves fully, as though they were hearing music made by someone else. And they knew they were onto something.

“Metal is the seed of CHAOS ECHŒS’ music. But the more it goes the more I doubt CHAOS ECHŒS’s music is metal…
Metal is simply a primordial element of our art, a part of our expression we use, mix, confront, twist…”
— Stefan Thanneur, Interview by Cathal Rodgers,
Existentiell - Boundaries and Paradigms, 2019.

The Unfathomable EP, with a single 16-minute track, was CHAOS ECHŒS holding up a hand. Wait here, they said. We will return. And they did, with second album Mouvement: darker still, more aggressive, six instrumental tracks adding up to a massive whole. Layers of guitar over tumbling, tribal-yet-free drums, bass like tar oozing through cracks in the walls. And then there was Sustain, on which the free jazz element of their sound came to the fore, thanks to guest performances by saxophonist Mats Gustafsson on its two long tracks. Immersive and unnerving, it broke the final chains binding CHAOS ECHŒS to any genre or territory; the world was theirs.

Now, though, they are choosing to say farewell with Remains, a collection of live recordings the band felt it was important to share before it all was buried under ashes and dust.

This, then, was CHAOS ECHŒS – never what you expected, often more than what you were ready for, but always marking a path for the truly intrepid to follow. They may be gone, but the path remains.

ecstasy with the nonexistents • 2021

From Sentient Ruin Laboratories’ website:

The final testament from the absolute gods of underground experimental death metal. Needing no introductions, Sentient Ruin proudly brings you this exclusive limited edition vinyl release of Chaos Echœs' final recording, perhaps their most ambitious, imaginative and all-encapsulating recorded output ever. First released as disc 1 of the 2019 2CD outtakes compilation Remains, this massive and gloriously-sounding professionally mixed and mastered live soundboard recording captures the french masters of ritualistic death metal alchemy at the pinnacle of their transformative power as they step out of every comfort zone known to revisit familiar places and re-emerge into a new and unseen transfiguration of themselves.
Profoundly moving and ungraspably visionary, Ecstasy With the Nonexistents sees the French alchemists metamorph and manipulate some of their most iconic tracks to subvert and transcend their own identity, creating a ritual within a ritual, where death and black metal, experimental noise and ritual ambient dissolve into a singular flow of consciousness dictated by the abstract axioms of transformation, ritual improvisation and free form deconstructionism.

REMAINS • 2019

Remains is a collection of live recordings.
The first disc, Ecstasy with the Nonexistents, is a soundboard recording of a full live set from 2018. Assembled with great care, this set list was only performed in concert once. The concept was to reinvent the songs, re-arranging pieces from Transient and Mouvement into a continuous three-part suite. The first section is slow, more self-centered than introverted, and obsessive. The second section is atmospheric, dominated by improvisations with bells, flutes, shamanic drumming, and mantra-like vocal patterns. The final section is carnal, wild and intuitive, completing the journey from an aggressive, selfish state to one of abandonment and sharing.
The second disc, IIIII, is a compilation of studio outtakes, alternate versions, and live recordings spanning 2012 to 2016. As always, the material is linked conceptually and through the mix in order to create a single long piece that evolves as it goes and echoes itself.

CHAOS ECHŒS WITH MATS GUSTAFSSON • SUSTAIN • 2018

With Sustain, CHAOS ECHŒS have not only surpassed their peers, they have surpassed themselves. The band – guitarist Kalevi Uibo, his drummer brother Ilmar Uibo, bassist Stefan Thanneur and second guitarist Fabien W. Furter – are joined by saxophone colossus Mats Gustafsson of THE THING and FIRE! on two lengthy instrumental tracks. Spellbound and Harvest of Souls collectively sculpt an ominous and forbidding landscape of sound.

“Phantasmagoricans / fantastic magicians / musicians meet at the crux of resonance, shadow and the internal to commune a tonal invocation of fascination, patience and depth”.
– Stephen O’Malley

MOUVEMENT • 2018

“Disorienting, complex, metaphysical, heavy, and transcendental all at the same time! What I love about CHAOS ECHŒS is that they sound like no other, and with each listen, you will find another sonic door to walk through, not knowing where this band will lead you”. – Sean Reveron, CVLTNation.com, January 18, 2018.

“Regardless, everything flows so smoothly from one track to the next to create something impressively seamless. Even the titles seem to form a dark poem of sorts...CHAOS ECHŒS have done it again. Energetic, live performances, smooth songwriting, and focused vision all make Mouvement one of the first great albums of 2018. There isn't a bad song on this album, and giving it a listen from start to finish will leave you in an unshakeable trance”.

2017-ChaosEchoes-TheUnfathomableEP.jpg

THE UNFATHOMABLE EP • 2017

While The Unfathomable EP is intended as a bridge between the band’s first and second albums, it is also an outlier of sorts, in that this recording is more shapeless and ambient than the album material. The Unfathomable is one track – the longest piece in the band’s catalog – covering a full side of an LP, and among the most evocative and atmospheric pieces CHAOS ECHŒS has performed. Improvised and recorded in Paris in 2015, it was later edited and mixed by former band member Fabien W. Furter. Desolate, ritualistic, and cold – lunar in its emptiness –, it is a hymn to solitude, a collision of intermittent percussion, strings, and electronics, unfolding in slow, churning motions and abandoned to the corrosive machinations of entropy.

2015-ChaosEchoes-Transient.jpg

TRANSIENT • 2015

“French acts have been making some of the most consistently creative and adventurous metal of the 21st century. Transient, with its cold and inscrutable synthesis of psychedelia, industrial, death metal, black metal and even free jazz, has set a new mark that others must strive to surpass.”
— Phil Freeman, The Wire - Adventures in sound and music #376, May 2015.

“The subversive, hypnotic French group CHAOS ECHŒS are heavy metal by trade, but closer to ominous, ambient horror-movie music than headbanging fodder. The band is so arty in their approach to snail’s pace doom that you don’t so much listen to their debut full-length as you absorb it. It’s the sort of thing Matthew Barney hears in his sleep: Over the course of 60 minutes, the crew doles out hypnotic patterns of crushing, pulsating, air-compressed guitar riffs; evil-monk chanting; gremlin growls; chromatic church organ and velvety drapes of art-noise. By the time it turns into a jazzy, demented circus swirl toward the end of the third track, Advent of My Genesis, it doesn’t seem all that strange.”

2014-ChaosEchoes-DuoExperience.jpg

Duo Experience /Spectral Affinities • 2013

In August of 2012, the Duo Experience /Spectral Affinities recording emerged from a session involving only Ilmar and Kalevi as a duo. This sort of minimalist arrangement was envisioned early in the band’s existence, as it was agreed upon from the outset that the composition of CHAOS ECHŒS would take many forms depending on purpose and circumstance. Duo Experience /Spectral Affinities offers a different facet of CHAOS ECHŒS’ music, which in this case is characterized by the experimental ambiances and soundscapes of entirely free-form improvisations.
